Dr. Martha Sweeting

Her first job was at Harbour Cities Veterinary Hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She then moved to St. John’s, NL where she worked at St. John’s Veterinary Hospital, then the Avalon Animal Hospital. Seeing the need for veterinary services outside of St. John’s, Dr. Sweeting established The Mobile Vet, a travelling practice where she went to many different communities in Eastern and Central Newfoundland. She saw a lot of the province that she probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise and met many wonderful Newfoundlanders, but she didn’t make enough money to live on – actually, she lost money. If she would have known anything about business back then, she would have set it up as a non-profit.

A business savvy friend, who was also a client, recommended that Dr. Sweeting set up a Veterinary Practice in Clarenville. She then opened the Community Veterinary Hospital. Eventually, she needed to expand my facility and relocated the practice from a Strip Mall to a stand-alone building, with a fenced yard, just outside of Clarenville. The business was sold in 2021 when she (mostly) retired.

Dr. Sweeting served on the Board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Veterinary Medical Association (NaLVMA), she served as the Liaison between NaLVMA and the Vet Tech Program at Dalhousie University. She has been the organizer of the Clarenville Terry Fox Run since 2011. She is a Director of the Goose Bay Heritage Society.

Now that Dr. Sweeting is (mostly) retired, she enjoys cross-country skiing, walking my dogs and running. I have completed 12 marathons (42.2K), including the Boston Marathon. She also really like sleeping, cooking, baking and eating.
