Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association

Corwin Mills Community Cares Award – 2023

Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association (DTSA) is a volunteer-based outdoor recreational adventure club which has been in existence since 2000. DTSA is an incorporated, not-for-profit Snowmobile/ATV/Outdoor Adventure club built and operated entirely by volunteers. For a small group, the dedication to volunteering is unprecedented. The group of approximately twenty-thirty people has focused on building a safe multi-use trail network. They maintain 150 kms of trails and three warm-up huts. Their vision is to provide outdoor adventurists with a premier multi-season destination in a pristine environment creating an exceptional outdoor experience.

DTSA have invested significantly in the trail network to provide mapping, signage, and improve safety. This is beginning to show a significant return on investment for our group. Tourism entities and businesses have experienced tremendous benefits from their efforts.

DTSA have experienced a significant uptake in their social media platform. In 2016, they had 500 members on Facebook and now they have 4900 members. They have seen a 960% increase with 60% of their members being from the Avalon Peninsula, which is the focused audience as a target group. The favorite trail of this group is what they call the Cormack loop which has 2 warm-up huts.

Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association does not sell tourism products. They maintain a multi-use managed trail system that is arguable the best in Newfoundland-Labrador. As they market their adventure packages, they are drawing in visitors all over the province. The increased visitation means there are higher hotel occupancy rates and an influx of customers at local hotels, gas stations and restaurants. These visitors bring significant funds into our community. The local businesses have supported the Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association for the past two decades.
