Mr. Ivan Hynes
Business Hall of Fame – 2017.
Ivan Leslie Hynes was born February 21, 1933 in the house that he grew up in. Years earlier his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Hynes had moved to Clarenville from Central Newfoundland. His father was employed as a machinist with Canadian National Railways.
Mr. Hynes started his career as a bank teller with the Bank of Nova Scotia. While duly employed with the bank, in the summer months he would set up a trailer at the railway station and sell deep fried fish and chips to the hungry travellers. Over the years he also brokered for MUNN Insurance Co., as well as selling canvas tent trailers from his house on Cormack Drive.
As time went he saw an opportunity to own his own business and purchased the assets of Fern Ltd., the local jewellery store. On September 11, 1958 he opened Hynes Jewellery Ltd. in the little blue building by the tracks. He continued to operate at that location until 1973 when he relocated the business to the Clarenville Shopping Centre setting up in his very own building. At that time he invested in engraving equipment and offered a jewellery repair service.
In 1998 his daughter Debbie along with her partner Richard purchased the inventory and assets of Hynes Jewellery Ltd. and opened Fine Things Inc. Mr Hynes officially retired at the age of 65. Today Hynes Jewellery is still a registered company as it continues to lease out the building in the Shopping Centre.
