Wendall Moore, CA
Business Hall of Fame – 2012.
Born at Dildo to Lewis and Clara Moore he moved to Clarenville as an infant. Following graduation from high school in 1960 he worked in clerical positions in the banking, sawmill, and construction industries until 1966.
Following a two year stint with a provincial firm of Chartered Accountants (H.R. Doane & Company), he transferred to British Columbia to a regional associate (Winspear, Higgins, Stevenson & Co.) and graduated through the institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1973.
Following employment with the same firm in Toronto, he returned home to Clarenville in 1974, becoming managing partner with a provincial firm of Chartered Accountants (Walters, Hoffe & Co.) and in1986 set up an accounting practice as a sole practitioner which he continued to operate until associating with Belanger, Clarke, Follett and McGettigan, a provincial firm of CAs in January, 2009. He is presently retired from his accounting practice.
He is a past member of the Kinsman Club and the Rotary Club of Clarenville; he has assisted with many charitable fundraisers over the years including the Relay for Life for the Cancer Society. He has also contributed countless hours of professional service on a personal basis to numerous not-for-profit organizations such as senior’s clubs, churches, service clubs, low-income groups and neighbourhood improvement organizations. In that regard he has also served as appointee on a citizens’ panel falling under federal jurisdiction, to determine individual eligibility for Canada Pension Plan disability benefits. He is a founding member of, and served several years with the Bonavista-Trinity-Conception Emergency Medical Fund-a charitable fund set up to assist families to cover costs of medical treatment, mostly out of the province and not covered by other sources. This organization, funded entirely through voluntary efforts, disbursed tens of thousand dollars to those who needed it.
His accounting, auditing, and business advisory background includes firs hand experience with a wide range of business interest groups and entities, a diversity of industries by classification, and many not-for-profit organizations and institutions, with roles ranging from performance of specialized audits and feasibility studies related to resource, tourism and other sectors, to determination of applicability and compliance of transactions to Federal, Provincial and Municipal tax and related laws.
He has, through his accounting firm, which was approved to train Chartered Accountant Students, trained numerous students over the years who in turn have brought their newly acquired skill sets to assist businesses throughout the region and province. Many have established accounting practices, become entrepreneurs, as well as Executive Officers, Directors, and Managers within City and Provincial governments, and large Provincial and National companies in the investment, resource and retail sectors.
As part of that process of education he has spent thousands of hours personally coaching dozens of new business owners through their earliest days, thereby providing invaluable and timely assistance. The resulting thriving enterprises have added considerably to economic well being of the area.
It is in this area- ie assisting in training of people, particularly young people, in order to enable them to successfully engage with the business world and to provided entrepreneurs, particularly new ventures, with enough direction to help them succeed- that Moore states has been the most rewarding in a professional sense.
