Mercer’s Marine

Mercer’s Marine Equipment Limited is a fourth generation, family owned business that had its beginnings in 1957. The business opened as a General Store and was founded by Ralph and Ruby Mercer of Clarenville.

In 1965, their son Philip, joined the family business and would be involved for three years before going off on his own venture in 1968. In 1971, Philip returned to take over management of the General Store. During this period, the product emphasis at the General Store turned to marine products while continuing to maintain a diverse product line. The diversity of the product lines at Mercer’s still exists today and is a critical part of the Mercer’s success story.

In 1987, Philip’s son Scott began working at Mercer’s on a full-time basis after gaining valuable experience “growing up” in the store and on the water. Philip and Scott work together to form a strong management team. Business operations are definitely a family affair with Philip’s wife Roberta, son Scott and grandson Nick involved in the daily operations of the business.

Evolving since 1981, the Mercer’s product catalogue consisted of a handful of pages, photocopied product images and included a combination of typed and handwritten descriptions. Today, the Mercer’s Marine product catalogue is one of the largest sources of Marine & Outdoor Equipment in Atlantic Canada and has become one of the company’s most valuable marketing tools.

The company’s physical facility has grown substantially to accommodate the largest inventory of Marine and Outdoor equipment in Atlantic Canada. Mercer’s customer base is located all across Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada, as well as Canada’s North and the United States. They have a Facebook page and a website which has their on-line catalogue and weekly flyers; and their customers can order right on-line for the merchandise they wish to purchase. Mercer’s Marine currently has 34 employees and is looking at future employment needs as they continue to grow in today’s market.
