Dr. Dean Halleran

Business Hall of Fame – 2019.

Dean was born and raised in St John’s, NL. He did is pre-Optometry studies at Memorial University. He is a graduate of the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (now Cardiff University) Cardiff, Wales, UK. and holds a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas.

Following graduation Dean and his wife Debbie established the first Optometric practice in Clarenville in 1979.

Dean joined the Rotary Club of Clarenville in 1980 and continues as a member today currently serving as the club’s Treasurer. He is a two time President of the Rotary Club. Also, in 1980 he joined the Clarenville Nordic Ski Club and has served in various executive positions and continues as a member. He has served as President of the Clarenville Public Library Board and Chair of the Clarenville High School Scholarship Trust Foundation.

He was appointed in 2006 as a Medical Member to the CPP Disability Review Tribunal and served 6 years. He also spent 10 years as the Eye Care Advisor to Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada.

He has served 2, three year terms as Registrar of the Newfoundland and Labrador Optometric Board and its successor the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Optometrists. He recently completed a 9 year term as Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Optometrists. He is currently Chair of the College’s Continuing Education Committee.

Dean has been active in his professional Association and has serviced as both Secretary and President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Optometrists. He currently Co-Chairs the Association’s Scholarship Committee.

Dean’s other interests include hiking, skiing, travelling, archery, painting and he soon hopes to be a model train enthusiast.
