“Making Memories” by Dale Ryan
Winters growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador were always memorable. One of my favorite memories is how that first fall of “sticky” snow meant it was time yet again to build a snowman. Round and round the garden we’d go, rolling up snow, and searching for bits of coal or rock to serve as his eyes, twigs for his arms, and begging mom to let us have a carrot for his nose. Our snowman would only be complete once a scarf, hat and mittens could be raided from the cupboard. That snowman with the carrot nose and crooked grin would watch over us until the winter’s sun would melt him away.
